The present internship report is the culmination of a process of personal and professional change, contextualized in curricular plan of the Masters Course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, taught by the Portuguese Catholic University. This report presents the description and critical-reflexive analysis of the academic course and the development of specialized competences, in the scientific scope under study. This document begins with a systematic review on the needs of the family of the critically ill person in the emergency room. It is concluded that family members have a wide range of needs, and the most significant needs are those in the category of meaning and information, followed by the category of proximity. During the internship, competences were developed through the provision of specialized nursing care to the critically ill person and his/her family; the promotion of the quality of nursing care; and the promotion of good practices of prevention and control of infections. There was a continuous promotion of a physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual environment where the person’s safety measures were distinguished. For this reason, two lectures, entitled of “Traçados Cardíacos” and “ISBAR – Comunicação Eficaz na Transição de Cuidados de Saúde” were carried out, an information leaflet on measures to prevent falls was made and meant to be given to the person and family seeking healthcare services and, as a evidence-based practice strategy, the student participated in the 3rd Course of Non-Invasive Mechanical Ventilation for Nurses, in the IV International Congress of Medical-Surgical Nursing and the 1st Seminar of Nursing in Extra-Hospital Emergency, and in the 1st International Seminar of the Master in Nursing (Lisbon) “Specialized Intervention: The Value Between the Clinic and the Academy”. This academic course allowed the consolidation of knowledge and the acquisition of competences that allowed the provision of specialized nursing care, in a critical and conscious way, based on scientific evidence.
