Introduction: Benign mesodermal neoplasms affect the oral cavity andconstitute a varied group of lesions which could be originate from different tissues and present different prevalences. Although they present a varied histogenesis, their clinical appearance can be similar within the variety, making their diagnosis very difficult. Aim: Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, clinical and histological characteristics of benign mesodermal neoplasms of the Clínica Dentária Universitária, Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Viseu. Materials and Methods: 20-year retrospective descriptive observational study was perfomed, through the analysis of: gender; age; typology; lesion coloration; size; localization; biopsy technique; clinical diagnosis and histological characteristics of the lesion. This was followed by a descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using SPSS software. Results: 31 mesodermal neoplasms were included, with a prevalence of 16,5%. The mean age was 63,1 years with a female prevalence (58%). The most common lesions coloration was normocolored (54,8%). The most prevalent types of neoplasms were fibroma (77,4%), followed by hemangioma and fibrolipoma. The mostcommon sites in which neoplasms develop were buccal mucosa (33,3%) and tongue (29,6%). The most prevalent diameter range size is about 0,5 – 1 cm (51,6%). The biopsies performed were entirely excisional, and mostly performed using the traditional method – scalpel (54,8%). The concordance between the clinical and anatomopathological diagnosis was 87.1%. Conclusions: The present study shows that mesodermal neoplasms usually tend to present a small growth, normocolored, asymptomatic, normally on the buccal mucosa, predominantly in females, aged between the fourth and sixth decades of life. A correct characterization and differentiation between the benign mesodermal neoplasms, in study, provides Dentists the knowledge to correctly diagnose, in orderto manage the best treatment approach for each patient.
