Abstract

The scientific and technological progresses require from the nurses, permanent efforts of updating competencies so that they can provide high quality care. In order to expand my skills and to grow as a nurse and as an human being, I decided to pursue the academic path, joining the Nursing Masters with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing.
This course aims the competencies development on the provision of specialized care to the adults who are experiencing life threatening disease and his family. My choice for this area was inevitable due to my passion for emergency.
This report aims to address a pedagogical tool, having as objectives: to contextualize and characterize each service where I’ve been; making a critical analysis of the activities developed in each module (because they suffered adjustments to meet the contingencies found in each service) and the description of my evolution during the stage.
Thus, the critical and reflexive analysis of the undertaken activities in each module, was the adopted methodology in this document, in order to achieve the objectives and competencies of the several domains defined by Ordem do Enfermeiros to become a Medical Surgical Nursing Specialist. The domains of competencies defined were: Legal, Ethics and Professional Responsibility; Quality Management; Care Management; Professional Learning Development and Medical Surgical Nursing Specific Domain addressing areas as management, care providing, investigation and training. At each stage module, I developed new personal and professional skills which, necessarily, influenced my performance at the next one. That’s why I’ve decide to divide the document into several chapters besides the Introduction and the Conclusion, so that I easily describe my evolution.
The three modules of the clinical teaching took place in the Emergency Service of Hospital Pedro Hispano; in the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit of Centro Hospitalar Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho, E. P. E. and in the Oporto Delegation of the Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica (National Institute of Medical Emergency).
Finally, this report presents my evolution in the several domains of knowledge.
