Abstract

Education plays a preponderant role, both in its theoretical as in its practical form, throughout the process of developing skills as a specialist nurse. Based on this assumption, the present report concerning the 11.o Curso de Mestrado em Enfermagem – Especialização em Enfermagem Médico-Cirúrgica da Escola de Enfermagem do Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, seeks to portray the results obtained from my clinical learning and from the applied research that I have produced, combining the information coming from my initial specialized training and from the professional and personal experience resulting from the internships. This report’s design is based on the course carried out, in chronological order, through critical analysis and reflection on the development of specialized nursing care to the critically ill patient and his family, starting in a renal transplant care unit, following a respiratory intensive care unit, and ending in a central emergency service. As an essential part of the curricular unit A Pessoa em Situação Crítica e Família – Vigilância e Decisão Clínica, I chose to begin this report revealing the skills acquired during my professional practice, recognized by the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in the specialized nursing care to the critically ill patient and his family submitted to renal transplant, in a renal transplant care unit of a central hospital in Lisbon. Regarding the curricular unit Estágio Final e Relatório, I carried out my internship at a respiratory intensive care unit and at a central emergency service of a central hospital in Lisbon, where I became involved in a transversal way in the care of the critically ill patient and his family and in the elaboration of a systematic literature’s review on the effectiveness of the use of the Nursing Activities Score in the workload of the nurses’ evaluation. At the end of this course I developed skills as a specialized nurse in caring for the patient in critical situation, with the acquisition of knowledge that allowed me the critical and reflective development seeking the excellence of the care provided.
