The research presented in this dissertation is related with self-care, taking as its object of study the diabetic people of a certain region inside the area of Grande Porto. The study emerges from a research path since January 2010 until September 2011, involving a Health Centre of the Unidade Local de Saúde de Matosinhos. According a quantitative research paradigm, oriented towards the identification of patterns and regularities statistics, this research is descriptive and exploratory type, focusing on the description of the problems in the study – the levels of self-care of diabetics through a process of data collection in a single moment, and the levels of decision-making and participation in decisions on health, by these same patients. The core aspects of this research were the self-care theory, by Orem, and the transitions theory, by Meleis. The sample consisted in 200 participants having been obtained by convenience and stratified by Unidade de Saúde Familiar, sex, age and type of treatment, with or without insulin. The results obtained allow us to say that the vast majority of participants show, on one hand, a greater level of self-care to diabetes regarding medication, but on the other hand a low self-care when we refer to physical activity. Regarding the decision-making of people, the obtained values were very low, meanwhile the values obtained about participation in decisions relating to health care were a bit higher.
