Abstract

This dissertation aims to study Burnout in Veterinary Doctors and Nurses in the Portuguese context. Over the years there has been an increase in interest in companion animals and consequently an increase in professionals. Despite the exponential increase in this area of health, this is a profession increasingly recognized for its risk of Burnout. This disease is a consequence of chronic stress which is related to mental problems such as anxiety, loss of self-esteem, depression and at a more extreme level, suicide. This prolongation of occupational stress develops as a result of excessively high demands at work and consequently low resources. Therefore, the present quantitative study (n=164), aims to explore the relationship between Burnout and working conditions and sociodemographic variables in two professions. The objective of this present investigation is to help to better understand the predictors of Burnout, providing individual and collective strategies to prevent or minimize it. With this study, it was realized that in the future the differences between management and non-management positions, differences between nationalities, the impact of age on Burnout and organizations that do not provide psychological support as they do for this population can be explored in more depth.
