Abstract

The aim of this report is to demonstrate the course of learning throughout the Mastere’s Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing in the Area of Critically Ill Patients from Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, serving also as an evaluation tool for the Curricular Unit “Est Final and Report”. During the first year, the practical context started in the emergency service, in which several skills were developed and were a contribution for the beginning of the change in critical reflexive thought as well as the interest in infection prevention and control. In the second year, within the scope of the Final Internship and Report Curricular Unit, the internship component was divided between two contexts that were duly characterized: intensive care unit and burn unit. The activities developed during the two internships and the preparation of this document were based on theoretical knowledge acquired over the years, on the professional experience and skills of the specialist nurse, particularly in areas of ethical and legal professional responsibility, improvement continuous quality management, care management and development of professional learning. Skills development in the field of intensive care involved practice of care for people in critical situations, such as: communication with the patient and family, participation in internal medical emergencies, to transport patients to the hyperbaric chamber and understanding its functions, passive participation in nursing follow-up consults, to develop skills in prevention and control of infection before, during and after hemodialysis and to investigate and to implement an oral hygiene protocol for people in critical situation with non-invasive ventilation, as well as constant bibliographic research and reflection on the care provided. The skills developed in the burn unit focused on the management of care, material and human resources, protection of the individuality and privacy of patients as well as the continuous development of skills in terms of prevention and control of infection as an integral part of the commission to control infections and antimicrobial resistance, carrying out audits in this area and developing an intervention proposal for the follow-up consultation from nurses to burned patients. The educational path carried out so far, allows to conclude that the specialized clinical practice based on theoretical-practical knowledge with the best scientific evidence led to personal and professional growth not only in the areas of common competences of the specialist nurse, but mainly as a nurse in the scope of infection prevention and control.
