Abstract

Media Art can be defined as an inter and multidisciplinary category that connects art, science and technology. There are many artists and institutions that contribute for the visibility of Media Art in Portugal, although information related to collecting and preserving this typology is still significantly short. Within the goals of understanding which Portuguese institutions collect Media Art and what type of preservation strategies are being implemented, the following research combines bibliographic and data survey, under critical analysis. The importance of this research relies on the contribution with relevant data that can instigate future investigations, as also pitch in the current discussion related to the production and preservation of cultural heritage problematic. The data survey related to collections nature and condition was carried out with five institutions, Museu da Bienal de Cerveira, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Centro de Arte Oliva, Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado and Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado, throuh the form of an on-line survey. In the last chapter of the following investigation, current international Media Art preservation practices are analyzed, followed by a glossary of some associated terms, since through the collected data was detected some discrepancy in preservation proceedings and concept definition. Thus, this investigation functions as an analysis of the state of art related to concepts, collecting and preserving Media Art in national territory, and existing preservation strategies, contributing for the community that creates, cares and manages cultural heritage and inciting more conservation professionals to specialize in preservation of Media Art.
