This Activities Report describes, critically analyses and reflects the course of my Masters Degree in Nursing, specialising in Medical Surgical Nursing. The curricular structure of the Instituto de Ciências da Saúde - Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ICS-UCP) is about the development of the skills described in the general regulation of the Master s Degree in Nursing. Apart from the theoretical side there was a practical side in the form of an Internship, split in to 3 Modules of Internship: Module I - Emergency Service; Module II Intensive Care Unit; Module III Optional, which I completed in the Palliative Care Unit and the Home Assistance Unit. During the three Modules of Internship my main intervention focused on the reflection and analysis of the approach to the palliative patient in his/her critical stage. In this document I want to address the issue of patients with chronic, incurable diseases, in a situation of worsening. In this way I want to discuss the concepts of overtreatment, professional attitudes in the process of caring with respect to decision-making being integrated in a multidisciplinary team, and finally I will talk about the nurse s intentions and unconditional acceptance of the patient, based on a trustful relationship. I.e, with the intent of decreasing pain and contributing to the welfare and comfort of the patient. Considering all the matters declared in this text, I think that s important to establish the main subject as The Care Provided to Palliative Patient in Critical Stage. This report also makes clear the specialist nurse’s duty to general society and our important responsibilities relating to social & health problems so that we may improve the quality of our health care. In this way the reflection & formation of our training should be seen as a resource to improve the practice of care through the quality of health services, and also in identifying the patient and family s needs in time.
