This report was written within the scope of the Master's Degree and Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the Nursing Area for Critically Ill Patients, and more specifically of the Curricular Units "The Critically Ill Patient and the Family - Surveillance and Clinical Decision Making" and "Final Internship and Report", which require at least two internships. My internships took place in a multipurpose intensive care unit in the Lisbon area, in an emergency department of a trauma center hospital in Israel and in an Immediate Life Support ambulance of INEM. The purpose of this report is to present the path of acquisition and development of the Competences of the Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Critical Care Nursing, through a descriptive and critical-reflective methodology. The document is divided into four parts: Introduction, where I set the framework of the theme, the internship and the structure of the report; Literature review, where I summarize Madeleine Leininger's Theory of Diversity and Universality, since it is the theory that accompanied the development of the internships, and make reference to her Sunrise Model; Description of the internship sites and skills development, where I describe the different internship sites, talk about the activities carried out, make a critical reflection on the interventions and experiences experienced and how I developed the skills inherent to the Specialist Nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing; Conclusion, where I briefly explore the professional development of the skills acquired in the 4 domains (the domain of professional, ethical and legal responsibility, the domain of continuous quality improvement, the domain of care management, and the domain of the development of professional learning), talk about the difficulties experienced and the implications for the future. In conclusion, it is considered that the competencies of expert nurses were satisfactorily developed and that, in the future, I will be able to provide specialized care in the area of Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of critically ill patients, through decision making processes, with reflected actions and evidence-based practice.
