Abstract

With this report I intend to express in writing the route to acquiring and developingspecialized clinical skills in the Medical-Surgical Nursing Master’s degree in the area ofexpertise: Person in Critical Condition, from the Institute of Health Sciences - Lisbon, from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. As a Nursing thought process guiding line, I integrated two theoretical frameworks in thedevelopment of excellent care: the Theory of Human Care by Jean Watson and the Theoryof Transitions by Afaf Meleis.Alongside the clinical course, I streamlined the results of research in care, addressing thematter of the integration of nurses in the care for people in critical condition. By mappingthe integration difficulties and strategies, I sought to respond to a complex challenge ofquality and safety in care, given the increasingly accelerated mobilization and hiring ofnursing professionals.Integrating theoretical knowledge into specialized care, I developed skills that promote aprofessional attitude as a Specialized Nurse in two contexts: Intensive Care Service andCentral Emergency Service. Along with the acquisition of specific skills, it was possible toidentify areas of intervention that allowed growth as a professional, carrying out activitiessuch as the promotion of training sessions for the team. In the Intensive Care Unit, Icontribute to the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infection throughintegrated training in care regarding testing for research for SARS-CoV-2, and a training session on the prevention of infection in intravascular catheters. In the emergency department, care is focused on the sector considered the most critical: the resuscitationroom, where the severity scale, the fear and anxiety of the person and its family are more complex. Knowing that communication failures are one of the main causes of adverse events on global scale and that most of them occur in moments of care transition, a training session was held alerting to the importance of standardizing communication for the continuity of care.
