Abstract

This report is the result of a learning process developed during the traineeship within the master's degree course in nursing, specializing in medical-surgical nursing. This document aims to be a critical reflection of my journey through the modules carried out in the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department and Infection Control Committee, justifying the skills acquired to practice as a professional specialist nurse. In the intensive care unit, activities and strategies were directed to critical patient care, development of technical and relational skills, with the objective of continuous improvement of healthcare, and, implementation and standardization of best practices. In the Emergency Department the critical patient was addressed, identifying needs, sources of instability and risk of organic failure. The relationship with the family/patient was enhanced so as to promote humanized care, and through training, the importance of nursing when approaching the patient with sepsis was transmitted to colleagues. In the Infection Control Committee, through recommendations and dissemination of measures for the control and prevention of infection, the focus was on improving the quality of care and on developing appropriate practices. To accomplish the goals set out, the strategies and activities carried out have proved to be of vital importance in mobilizing the knowledge and skills inherent to the professional practice as a specialist nurse.
