O desafio do desenvolvimento de competências

Abstract

This report was made within the scope of obtaining the Master’s Degree in Nursing, with Medical-Surgical Nursing specialization, in the Field of Critical Care. Its purpose was to give visibility to the route taken in two internship fields: The Prevention and Control of Infection and Resistance to Antimicrobials Unit and in the Emergency Department of a central hospital in Porto.
The report was divided into two distinct parts: the characterization of the internship fields, in which a description of the physical structure of the units was made, in order to integrate, understand their dynamics/functioning and the description/development of the ordinary competences domains of the Specialist Nurse, which contribute so much for the excellence of the care provided. A critical / reflective and descriptive methodology was used, which aimed to demonstrate the ability to identify situations, present solutions, reflect on the activities carried out, their ethical and social implications, communicate the conclusions, having as pillar the development with autonomy, of a practice based on high quality
standards and scientific knowledge.
In the professional, ethical and legal responsibility fields critical reflections arising from concrete situations, such as decision-making in end-of-life situations, isolation of patients and the absence of family members, highlighted the conduct of my interventions by ethical principles like: Autonomy, Justice, Beneficence and Mon-Maleficence, as required by the professional code of ethics.
In the continuous quality improvement field emphasis was placed on identifying improvement actions and their implementation, within the scope of infection control, risk management and training, creating added value in the multidisciplinary team, and consequently health gains.
In the care management field, the accomplishment of care plans, the management and supervision of human / material resources was emphasized, aiming to promote and enable an enhanced environment and guaranteeing the quality of care provided.
In the development of professional apprenticeships domain, these were developed along this path, where in view of the complexity of health and diseases situations, an interdisciplinary approach was required. This approach required self-knowledge and assertiveness, in search of clinical praxis, based on scientific evidence, in combination with personal skills and characteristics, which contributed to achieving a high level of performance, surely promoting the quality of health care.
The importance of the internships and the elaboration of this report in the achievement of the objectives was mentioned, as was the development of critical-reflexive capacity and competences as a Specialist Nurse in the care of critically ill patients, aspiring to be an expert in the Excellence of Caring.
