The professional practice of nursing requires that nurses be able to mobilize in a critically reflexive way scientific evidence that results from the rapid succession of new knowledge produced and of daily professional practice. When we approach the issue in the light of care for the sick and critically ill patient and family, we understand that in order to guarantee quality of care, with the purpose of achieving excellence in care, nurses need, based on a specific reference framework, to develop skills that support their care interventions. This report was developed under the Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing of the Portuguese Catholic University and aims to be a critical reflection of the development of scientific, ethical, social, relational and communicational care competences to the sick person and family in a critical situation, in diverse contexts such as Emergency Service, Intensive Care Unit and Continuing Care and Palliative Care Unit, as well as the objectives and activities developed that contributed to their development. Concepts such as, therapeutic relationship and comfort in the process of health / illness transition assume special relevance for the preponderant role that they represent in a quality care delivery. Considering the different areas in which this training course took place, some considerations are woven on aspects that are transversal to the provision of care with analysis of the implications of the development of competences for professional practice. Lastly, the final considerations analyze and summarize the entire course of competence development, personal and professional development and their contribution to the improvement in quality of care.
