Abstract

Television is the most rooted medium in the Portuguese’s daily life and, therefore,
plays a fundamental role as a source of information. The confidence and accessibility of
television information, combined with its ability to gather sources and transmit the news in
a way that facilitates the understanding of the subjects, makes the Portuguese generalist
television’s news one of the most viewed content in television synchronous programming.
Television journalism, due to its power of visibility and representativeness, must be
investigated from several perspectives. Thereby, considering the relationship that the various
sports have developed with the media, especially with television - having a significant power
in what had become many of the most practiced sport disciplines and with a greater number
of sympathizers -, that has become one of the most popular media to follow the main sporting
events, in this investigation we are trying to study the sports journalism in the television
context.
This report intends to combine the practical experience acquired in the internship in
Sports department of TVI's newsroom with a reflection on the current state of Portuguese
sports journalism. In this perspective, the research seeks to analyze how the sports news
transmitted by the two main TVI newscast, Jornal da Uma and Jornal das 8, are treated by
the professionals of this television broadcaster, realizing how the various sports agents are
portrayed: clubs, athletes, coaches or presidents.
In order to fulfill the proposed objectives in this investigation, the methodology
outlined includes the analysis of 36 newscasts, distributed over four months (October to
January), allowing the identification of the main topics covered in the newscasts. Among the
main results achieved, it was possible to identify the news category «Sport» as one of the
most represented and the topic «Football» as the one that had the leading role in the set of
news examined during the investigation's period.
