In the 2011 European Parliament’s study, about the scale and nature of the problem of early school leaving (ESL) in the European Union, one recognizes the need to monitor student’s absenteeism since this is one of the motor factors in the prevention of that phenomena, acting as an early warning system that enables schools to have an efficient early intervention. Bearing in mind than as an European policy, there is an increasing bet in the vocational training of secondary level and being professional courses, since 2004, a considerable percentage of the training offer in secondary schools, where there is a high percentage of ESL, the study of absenteeism in these courses is more and more pertinente. As the gathering of data that allows monitoring the attendance of students is the class director (CD) function, i tis extremely importante to wonder what role will the CD perform on the student absenteeism management and consequently in their attendance to school. This work presents a theoretical basis on the school as an organization; the analysis of the evolution in national and European policies regarding the implementation of training courses, with particular emphasis on professional courses in secondary education offer; the identification of the types, causes and consequences of the student’s absenteeism; and the general responsabilities of CD as absenteeism manager and as he/she deals with specific technical features of professional courses. This paper also presents a careful consideration on the themes described above, from the point of view of the daily practice of the school where I teach and I’m a CD.
