Abstract

This report represents a pathway in the acquisition and development of skills in nursing care to the critically ill adult and elderly patient. It is simultaneously a critical reflection of the work done during the Master's Degree in Medical-Surgical nursing. The training included Module I and II, having Module III being credited for due to previous caring in a geriatric unit for 10 years. So in both the Intensive Care Unit (Module II), and the General Emergency Department at S. Francisco Xavier Hospital (Module I), I had the opportunity to developa skills in the more complex care of critically ill patients and their families, training and management of care, demonstrating critical awareness to the problems of professional practice, related to the critical patient and their family as well as to the practice of hospital infection control. The research supported the practice and was always evidence-based. Skills in communication and teamwork, combined with a proactive attitude contributed to the success of personal and professional development, required in a Nurse Specialist. Literature review and the continuous reflection of practice were the methods used to prepare this report.
