Abstract

The main goal of the present document is to show the formative process developed over the 10th Nursing Masters with Medical-Surgical Nursing specialization of the School of Nursing at Oporto from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the competencies developed through the two internship modules accomplished in Intensive Care and Pre-Hospital assistance. In order to reach the proposed objectives for these masters, specific goals have established for each internship modules. For this, a proactive approach has been adopted in the detection of improvement opportunities and in line with the most actual evidence looked for answers and proposed solutions. The activities developed through this two internship modules and the elaboration of this work were based on the theoretical framework approached themes, namely, management in nursing and the nursing professional satisfaction as a predictor of the critical patient care quality. The activities description in the present document where framed in the common competencies of the specialist nurse, namely in the domains of their ethical and legal professional responsibility, continuous quality improvement, care management and development of the professional learning. The skills developed in the Intensive Care area involved the direct provision of care to adult patients in critical situation or organ failure, development of communicational skills both with the family and the patient, quality improvement with the development of a document for the hand over briefing, infection prevention by participating in the PAI´s daily audits, research development by participating in the in-house training, completion of a reflection about an intensive care case and the development of an exploratory descriptive research study, of quantitative nature, about the nurses professional satisfaction in the critical patient care and the continuous bibliographic research and care reflection. The skills developed in the pre-hospital assistance were focused in specific prehospital techniques such as the polytraumatized assessment, quality improvement by participating in the nursing notes audit, improvement of the ambulances medication storage and the development of a training program that will aim to improve communication and information transmission among professionals during the Manchester Triage. It is concluded that this formative course provided a personal and professional growth, making the specialized clinical praxis based on solid knowledge standards, facilitated learning in the management field, and in research, providing the skills development needed to obtain a nursing master’s degree.
