O enfermeiro especialista na promoção da parentalidade em pais de crianças internadas

Abstract

The hospitalization of a child is a stressful moment for the parents, which can lead to the rupture of roles, or interrupting the construction of parenthood that began with the beginning of the pregnancy. This demonstrates a difficulty experienced by many parents, who are suddenly taken by their child to a prolonged hospital stay, in a cold and aggressive environment for the family. The role of the Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health is to ensure the well-being of the child and family, promoting the performance of parental roles, never forgetting that parents are the main and best caregivers of that child. In this way, the philosophy of Family-Centered Care should always be maintained, centralizing nursing care in the family and not only in the child, but with a view to the well-being of all and the improvement of the child/young person's disease state.
The report presented is the result of work carried out in the Master's Course in Nursing, specializing in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing at the Institute of Health Sciences of the Catholic University of Portugal.
This work is the reflection of seventeen months of academic work, having been developed around the initially chosen theme, promotion of parenting of parents of hospitalized children. Developing skills around specialization of child and youth health defined by the Order of Nurses, having expanded the ability to assess skills acquired over time and according to the internship context.
The activities carried out contributed to broaden my knowledge and its transposition into practice, promoting the development of skills and the mobilization of resources for the work context through the ability to analyse, make decisions and act in favor of the well-being of those who I care for.
