In a reality where digital payments are sharply increasing and where the only public means of payment relies on old technologies and has a physical representation, it is pertinent to analyze a possible issuance of a digital euro: a public mean of payment issued by the European Central Bank and that could be accessed by companies (financial and non-financial) and physical persons. This study aims to undertake an exhaustive analysis of this subject, ranging from the competence of European Central Bank to issue this payment method, to its main advantages and disadvantages, and respective solutions to tackle or, at least, to mitigate one of the major risks of the digital euro – the disintermediation.
