The present internship report seeks to understand BTV’s special broadcasts on home match days, in light of the media event concept. This dissertation stems from a six month internship at BTV and aims to understand whether a match day’s special broadcast by Sport Lisboa e Benfica’s TV channel can be considered a media event, according to Elihu Katz and Daniel Dayan’s characterization. The current research begins by further developing the traditional concept of a media event, as well as other more recent approaches. With the purpose of better understanding the relationship between television and football, their interdependence and the emergence of club channels, the mediatization concept is likewise examined. Secondly, the report also aims to meet proposed goals through a formal analysis of BTV's strategy, complemented with interviews. The key components of the Dayan and Katz concept were used as the basis for an analysis grid, comparing the characteristics of media events with the ones identified in BTV's special broadcasts. These research methods, allied to the theoretical component, have allowed the conclusion that a BTV special broadcast of a home match day can be considered a media event. By transforming matches into media events, BTV benefits from a product that is more attractive to its audience
