The purpose of this work is to analyze the impact of the financial crisis during 2007-2014 on the management control of portuguese construction companies, in order to withdraw learning about an event that had a profound impact on the organizations of a very relevant sector in the economy. The arrival of the financial crisis in Portugal in the form of a european public debt crisis, triggered liquidity problems in the banking system, a decline in domestic demand and had consequences that extended to much of the country's economic sectors. The construction sector, being heavily dependent on credit (Tse and Ganesan, 1997) had been accumulating significant market losses since 2002, which made companies in this sector the most affected by the economic situation. In this context, management control systems can help to better understand and manage the uncertainty of the external environment (Pavlatos, 2021; Janke et al., 2014). Management control can have an important role in the perception and reaction to the effects of the crisis, in many sectors and also in construction companies. The literature review carried out on the subject in question and the conduct of multiple case studies in construction companies - two SMEs and two large companies - allowed us to conclude that at the level of management control, tools such as budget and Key Performance Indicators (KPI´s), as well as strengthening the importance of certain tools such as the Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERPS´s) were the main lessons learned by the companies analyzed in this financial crisis.
