Abstract

The professional activity is assumed as an important factor for the recovery of people with severe mental disorder (Leff & Warner, 2006). Since this is a deficient area in schizophrenia, several models of professional rehabilitation were developed (Colis, et al., 2010) which promote the professional functioning and can also influence the non-vocational domains (Bond, et al., 2001). In this sense, several researchers have focused on this subject in order to analyze the effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation programs together with other interventions (Bell & Bryson (2001), Bell, Bryson, Greig, Fiszdon & Wexler (2005), Bell, Zito, Greig & Wexler (2008)). On the other hand, Roder, Zorn, Müller and Brenner (2008), in order to promote social skills in specific functional areas of daily life, developed a program for the treatment of people with schizophrenia in residential, employment and occupation of free time areas (WAF). This program is an evolution of the Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT) and covers neuro and socio-cognitive interventions in combination with social skills (Roder, et al, 2006). This multiple case study had as main objective the evaluation of the impact of WAF labor program in the symptoms domains, the quality of life and the perceptions due to the working activity, in people with schizophrenia inserted in the community. Results showed the impossibility of obtaining a linear pattern on the symptoms outcomes obtained and they also highlighted improvements related to quality of life and showed worse results in the perceptions due to working activity. We conclude that the integration in the labor WAF program has a positive impact on the quality of life of people with schizophrenia by developing realistic and motivating goals, the training of socioprofessional skills and the mobilization of coping skills.
