Abstract

In the teaching of any school subject, evaluation is a concept and a fundamental process which allows to measure the knowledge acquired during a specific school term. Evaluating through tests is essential in order to be objective, but you should not forget that teaching-learning is a bilateral process that must be supervised, corrected and consolidated continuously. In the study of native and foreign languages in particular, besides the theoretical content, this process integrates the practice of the four language skills, which cannot be checked thoroughly by means of a traditional formative assessment worksheet. Therefore we suggest the use of educational games as an integrative activity through which pupils may revise and consolidate the learnt subjects and practise the several language skills and simultaneously assess their academic performance as well. The teacher can also get this information directly and immediately, which will allow the assessment of the pupils' work and of his or her own and drawing conclusions. This study aims to promote games in the language teaching, thus presenting several suggestions for recreational activities, which were carried out in the context of our teacher training and at the end of each teaching unit in order to review, evaluate and consolidate pupils’ acquirements. Based on what we know from childhood games, on television or just on real situations, we also intend to show that there is no age for this type of activity and that its versatility, allows us to adapt it to varied levels of education and syllabuses. To sum up, this report is the result of a serious research work, in which the usefulness of the didactic games will be recognised and reinforced by the main agents of the teaching-learning process and therefore they are a wise bet on a matter that is not innovative, though, is still attractive and with substance to be explored.
