The kimono revival is currently a process in which the kimono is becoming active, popular and important again in Japanese society as a result of certain historical and social factors. Through the growing number of second-hand and vintage stores dedicated to selling kimono, as well as the creation of kimono-wearing groups, it's possible to observe that the interest for wearing kimono in new creative and fashionable ways is growing in Japan. What was previously a merely formal and restrictive costume, is being reinvented and adapted to the younger generations' needs and aesthetic sensibilities. In other words, the use of informal non-traditional kimono is being revived as street fashion.Simultaneously, internet and social media, kimono rental services as culturaltourism activities, and the spread of Japanese culture through the Cool Japan campaigns have piqued the interest in kimono of people overseas. In this dissertation three case studies represent the growing number of European people interested in learning about kimono and wearing it as a result of its internationalization in recent years. This study intends to analyze what kind of activities these individuals carry out in the context of the kimono revival, and what it can mean for the future of kimono as fashionwear outside Japan.
