Abstract

This paper is a part of research project of a Master’s degree programme in Portuguese as a Second language / Foreign language. On this base, we analyze the use of the Portuguese language teaching materials/ textbooks at the primary level, which is produced by Macao Centre of Languages, in the context of secondary schools in Macao.The reference background of this paper is the teaching and learning of Portuguese in Macau, focusing on the perspectives of teachers and students. Besides describing the situation of Portuguese as a foreign language learning in Macau, we have combined the main characteristics of the language situation. We also gave a brief history of Portuguese language teaching in Macau. Then, we discussed the Portuguese teaching material with Chinese learners, both its use and importance in the context of Macao. We found that after teaching a series of lessons in teaching practice, there is a visible need to use and rearrange the Portuguese textbook in elementary level,as well as to redefine the teacher’s role in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language.
