Abstract
The energy crisis resulting from the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine led to great instability in the supply of one of the main sources of energy production for a significant number of European countries: the natural gas.As a result, there was an exponential increase in the prices of energy sold on the marginal market, leading to an unfeasible situation with prices exceeding €300 per megawatt hour. This scenario led to a joint Iberian response to establish a mechanism to limit natural gas prices within the liberalised market, with the respective adjustment being reflected to cover the losses of electricity producers. The question is how to determine its merit and whether we are facing a purely regulatory or political decision, and how to combine it with imperatives of encouraging renewable energies, combating climate changes and promoting sustainability.
