Abstract

The following report aims to expose and document the various stages of development of the short film The night and the King, produced as the final project of the Escola das Artes’ Master’s Degree in Cinema, while simultaneously undertaking a critical analysis of the process. Additionally, by confronting the final product with the essayistic, historical and cinematographic references that accompanied its making, a basis for its theoretical framing is established - knowing that, in its different stages, the project was grounded in the idea of connecting different contemporary authors and their multidisciplinary works, with a historical theological thought, in the construction of what we might call a “contemporary medieval film”. A field of possibilities for the problematization of contemporary questions (such as the degradation of the ecosystem by the social structures in charge) or even matters related to cinema (the tropes of certain film genres and how to build upon them) arises, with their dilution in the recreation of a historical ambience for the purposes of filmmaking.
