Abstract

This report comes at the Master's Degree in Nursing of a professional nature - Specialization in Nursing Pediatrics and Child Health, taking place in the academic year 2008 / 2009 at the Institute of Health Sciences / Higher Polytechnic School of Health Catholic University. Refers to the stage of Nursing Pediatrics and Child Health (Module II - Medical and Surgery Services) conducted in the workplace, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central, EPE / Hospital de Dona Estefânia. It aims to reflect on the route / work, as well as describe and analyze critically the activities undertaken in accordance with the objectives stated in the draft stage, in addressing the fear of parents when caring of children with chronic illness at home. Was used the descriptive, analytical and reflective methodology. Children’s parents with chronic disease face certain reactions and needs for which are often not prepared. Feelings like fear, anxiety, frustration and stress are often observed. If we associate these factors with the multiple hospitalizations that the child usually needs, we can find a suffering that can lead to a family crisis dynamic’s and affect each member differently. Situation the parents of these children are confronted with new requirements, like routines changes and many adaptations. The Specialist Nurse in Child Health and Paediatrics has a role at the hospital to play in this process, helping parents to acquire new skills and develop resilience (reorganize their roles, their rules, their coping mechanisms) in order to meet the special needs of the child. Through negotiation, the Specialist Nurse has also the responsibility to provide parents with the necessary learning opportunities for their caring participation, as partners, if they wish so. Parent’s participation will help to reduce the fear for child's caring, giving them confidence and preparing for the care that will have to provide at home. It is also known that this will contribute to an appropriate continuity of care and more peace in child’s.
