Abstract

Currently, audiences play a pivotal role in the building of the national television scenario, but reception studies are also a necessary part of it. In this respect, the individuals’ contribution to understanding the messages to which they are subject to is a constant growing concern. Keeping in mind that audiometric studies merely illustrate the characteristics of the viewers, the need to know and better understand the “non-viewers” is highly relevant.Considering the viewers’ freedom and possibility to opt not to make a choice – a real social fact - this study aims to carry out an analysis of this reality as well as the viewers’ motivations to reject certain contents, in addition to assessing if the compilation of these individual rejections leads to the existence of a group of non-viewers.The present proposal is included in the Television Studies subject, particularly in the scope of audience and reception studies, and addresses the sociodemographic typology of the rejections made by different types of viewers. Additionally, one seeks to understand the factors underlying the non-visualization of the contents made available by a public television channel (RTP2) as opposed to the contents offered by other open signal television channels.
