With the aim of assessing and conducting a comparative analysis of the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) - Decent Work and Economic Growth - in the European Union as a whole, its supranational regions, and its member-states during the subperiods 2010-15 and 2016-2022, this dissertation utilized the Alkire-Foster method to develop a set of indicators that constitute the designated Multidimensional Index of SDG 8. The results demonstrate a positive evolution in the implementation of SDG 8 from 2010-2015 to 2016-2022 across the different considered territories. In 2010-2015, most Member-states exhibited unsatisfactory performance, which reversed in 2016-2022. However, the results also reveal that specific objectives of SDG 8 improved in performance from 2010-2015 to 2016-2022, while others worsened. During 2010-2015, the regions Central and Eastern Europe and Southern Europe had the poorest performances. In 2016-2022, the regions with the worst performance were Southern Europe and Western Europe. Notably, there is significant disparity in the performances of Member-states within each of the four European supranational regions, indicating that the promotion of SDG 8 is primarily influenced by the specific circumstances experienced in each Member-state. Regarding individual Member-states, in 2010-2015, Sweden had the best performance, while Cyprus had the worst. In 2016- 2022, Ireland performed the best, while Finland and Slovakia had the lowest performance. The results provide insights into specific objectives that different territories need to focus their efforts on to improve their performance in implementing SDG 8.
