Abstract

Self and heteroeducação of people with diabetes (and carers), associated with the empowerment theory, is one of the most important ways to control diabetes mellitus (DM) and avoid more serious complications, such as diabetic foot, which aims the acquisition of knowledge and skills to manage the disease and changing lifestyles, helping to improve the quality of life and the sustainability of diabetology services in the National Health Service. Empirical research follows an essentially quantitative paradigm, corresponding to a pre-experimental study with pre-test and post-test, preceded by a pilot test. The sample consists of 132 people (98 people with diabetes mellitus and 34 carers) who resorted to diabetology consultation of CHBV, and referred them to participate in an educational session on the care of the feet. This sample was obtained from a non-probability sample of convenience to whom they applied a face self-report form (and heteropreeenchimento, among the illiterate), prior to the learning session, and reapplied, by phone, one moth after this session. To increase the effectiveness of the study, we used the telephone rappel strategy that has had a positive effect. The data collection tools were therefore two forms (the person with diabetes and the care provider). It was intended to evaluate the effect of an educational share (EPS) on the subjects of the sample, and the research question: Educational sessions have positive result in the self-education of diabetics and heteroeducação of carers, regarding essentially the diabetic foot ? The study took place between the end of the 1st quarter and the end of the 3rd quarter of 2013 Year in Hospital Baixo Vouga, EPE, in the service of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition. Our study goes against various studies showing that the approach centered on empowerment, based on self-determination and supported autonomy leads to effective care and self-management of the disease, where knowledge is essential for self-care in diabetes. This study supports therefore the evidence shows that EPS is an effective intervention for self and hetero care and the person with diabetes and, consequently, their quality of life. However, consulting the 827 cases, it appears that many patients are not referred for EPS sessions. So, greater awareness is required about the importance of these sessions to the sustainability of the SNS.
