The present study aims to comprehend the influence of the community in women’s civic participation and political participation, throughout their lives. 18 women were involved in this study, with ages between 26 and 75 years old. As instrument to collect the data it was used a semi-structured script of an interview. The results of this study reflect the importance of the community in Portuguese women’s civic and political participation, highlighting institutions as the most influential factor in promoting civic and political participation of the participants, followed by proximal social factors (e.g. family; peers). Comparing the influence between men and women in civic and political participation, it is noted that women had greater indirect influence on the civic and political participation of the participants, while men had greater direct influence. It is suggested that this topic continues to be studied, to understand the influence of community on Portuguese women’s civic and political participation, in different contexts, exploring the differences and similarities among the contexts that can influence the participation. The roll of community in maintaining Portuguese women’s civic and political participation is another relevant factor to attend.
