Abstract

The study presented is part of a broader project on Gender, Identity and Migration (Matos & Esposito, 2019) and its main objective is to analyze and understand the role of the family in the experience of foreign citizens who are detained in Portugal. To compose the sample, 14 participants of the project in which the study fits were randomly selected. From the analysis of the data, it was possible to realize that the family plays an important role in the migration processes, as well as in the period of detention in a Temporary Installation Center. Briefly, the accentuated influence on the part of the participants' families in their decision to emigrate was evidenced, insofar as they tend to do so to meet with family members who were already in Portugal, to gather money in order to improve the way of life family members in the country of origin, or to escape from disruptive / abusive relationships. Furthermore, it became evident that the experience of detention has a tendency to have a negative impact, especially on individuals who do not have a family support network in the destination country. Finally, with regard to future expectations, the presence of the family in the future ideals of the participants was noted, either to the extent of forming a family after deportation, or in the desire to see family members in the country of origin.
