Abstract

There has been, in Portugal, a growing appreciation of the technical and vocational education - the school is more geared towards labor market and knowledge and skills acquisition. The Technological Specialization Courses and professional courses provide young people with a dual certification: academic and professional, allowing the training of qualified technicians in specific areas. These courses are a type of secondary education, designed with a strong connection to the labor market. Taking into account the interests of the student, the learning of these courses enhance the development of skills for a specific job, in conjunction with the local business. This study aims to evaluate the effects of On-the-job-training (OJT) in the curriculum of these courses, particularly in the output profile of the learner and the articulation between schools and companies / institutions. It is considered that the OJT allows placing the students in real work situations, confronting them with the demands and challenges of labor market. Similarly, it enables companies / institutions to collaborate in the training of their potential future employees / staff, developing training paths in the schools, adjusted for the labor market demand. Therefore, this study tries to reflect on the relationship between schools and companies / institutions, as a key part in this training process. In this regard, supervisors from both institutions should direct its action to promote personal and professional development of students and the continuous improvement of educational processes. In this context, this study aims to report the On-the-job-training in the above mentioned courses, analyzing OJT regulation and the rules of procedure of schools, describing actions and practices of the Coordinator/Course Director and OJT teacher/adviser of two schools. The reality of these schools seeks to approach the business entities/ institutions, breaking the distance between the working life and education/training, away from their traditional positions of single agent. From these methods, it is possible to describe a set of practices based on common goals and the consequences for the operating mode of each school.
