Abstract

Instant lottery games are a form of gambling that, in the past decade as registered an accelerated growth nationwide. This specific type of game processes several characteristics that set it apart from other forms of gambling. Nevertheless, the fact that it is easily accessible to individuals under the legal age for gambling in Portugal, makes it an ideal tool to explore adolescents gambling behaviour. The present study accounted for 224 adolescents, all of them enrolled in the 10th grade of schools which are part of the greater metropolitan area of Porto. The aim of this study was to explore the role of individual and contextual variables in the involvement of adolescents in instant lottery games. Results indicated a greater involvement in instant lottery by the participants of the female gender. The role of the peers and family members also proved important concerning the involvement of the adolescents in instant lottery games. Results revealed that individuals who gamble in instant lottery games, tend to have friends who also involve themselves in this gambling activity. The same applies to family, the participants who show involvement in instant lottery games tend to have family members who also partake in this form of gambling.
