Abstract

When a child is born, the family expansion leads the couple to adapt to the new circumstances of parenthood. The process of adapting to parenting a high-risk newborn begins with the diagnosis, which may occur prenatally or at birth and hospitalization. This is generally a critical event for parents, as it requires an adjustment to a new reality. To help families to fully assume their parental role is part of the specific competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Child Health and Pediatrics, who’s action aims to evaluate families and respond to their needs, namely in adapting to changes in health and family dynamics. The course of learning described in this report was guided by the Adaptation Model of Callista Roy, allied with the Philosophy of Family-Centered Care, considering the adaptation to parenthood as the central concept. This concept was developed in a dynamic and continuous way, taking into consideration the characteristics of each context of care. In the Family Health Unit the focus was the adaptation to parenting a healthy newborn, whilst in the Pediatric Emergency Department the attention was the adaptation to situations of acute illness or aggravation of chronic illness. In the Pediatric Cardiology Unit the concept was developed taking into interest the high-risk newborn, the prenatal diagnosis and the referral to perinatal and pediatric palliative care. In accordance with the objectives defined for each context of care, nursing activities and interventions were accomplished, evidencing the development and acquisition of competencies as a Specialist Nurse in Child Health and Pediatrics.
