Abstract

This dissertation aims to analyse the interaction between humour, freedom of expression and political correctness, focusing on Rádio Renascença's Extremamente Desagradável programme. The focus is on how Joana Marques' humour, by satirising media celebrities, questions social norms without incurring in cancellation culture movements. The study also aims to explore how radio humour can be a critical platform for public reflection on the role of celebrities and the media in Portuguese society. Methodologically, a qualitative content analysis was used, focusing on 15 episodes selected based on their relevance and media impact. The analysis considered the interaction between humour and celebrities, addressing how humour challenges political correctness and explores freedom of expression in the contemporary media context. In conclusion, the study reveals that Extremamente Desagradável uses humour effectively to promote critical reflection on the role of media celebrities and the influence of the media in contemporary Portuguese society. By exploring the limits of political correctness and freedom of expression, the programme goes beyond entertainment to enrich public debate. Joana Marques' satire allows us to question the power dynamics and social impact of media figures, demonstrating the relevance of humour as a tool for cultural and social intervention.
