Abstract

Teachers are fundamental in a country or in a fast developing society. Together with families, they are the responsible for the guidance of the younger generations. In this context, schools are the ideal places to achieve a set of important learnings for the integration and healthy development of the society in which they live. Being a teacher is a great challenge and brings with it a great responsibility, therefore, the training and professional qualification of a teacher, be it at the beginning of his/her career or throughout life, has been a topic for great reflection and investigation. Their contribution in the formation of young people, at the production and the fostering of scientific, experimental, relational and moral knowledge, makes him/her a fundamental element in a society under construction, able to promote the physical and emotional well-being of all those who live in it This report aims at focussing on the training of teachers of the 3rd cycle of studies and secondary education, especially in their initial training. Within this initial training, it is intended to give some emphasis to the period of training and to the role of the supervisor, always using a simple and concise language. Bearing in mind that this period of training is very important to the trainee and remarkable for the supervisor, who welcomes him/her at school and teaches him/her the first steps of this profession, it was decided that the title of this study/reflection would be “The Role of the Training Supervisor in Teacher Initial Training”. In this analysis, and still having present the relevance of other important areas and topics related to the teaching profession, it will be shared an experience that embodies some of the scientific theories defended by Education experts. A brief reflection on the historic evolution of the profession, (building up teaching as a profession) the competences and functions of the teacher are issues that will also be approached because they complement each other and interconnect and harmonize the framing of the questions to be addressed. The acquisition of knowledge in different areas is a basic and essential necessity for all those who have in teaching their main job, as these allow them to vary learning strategies and produce more and better knowledge in the students. Nevertheless, this acquired knowledge becomes even more important when shared, discussed and analysed with the others, because it is a way to promote more and better information. To comprehend the idea of the previous paragraph, a chapter on this report presents the registration of an annual teaching plan - which is commonly known as planning - based on the experience gained over several years as a supervisor teacher. This experience comprehended a set of tasks and activities in the scientific, educational, administrative and relational field. It can provide support to those who have to play the same role. The reflections made in this report, as well as the issues and areas addressed can be an important contribution to a more objective, concrete and deeper knowledge of an educational/formative activity that is essential for improving the quality of education: the formation of new teachers.
