Abstract

The aim of this study is to test the relationship between compliance with the psychological contract, work engagement and general satisfaction with life among professionals in the portuguese public sector. In addition, it is intended to verify whether there are differences in the variables under study according to age group. This study used a quantitative crosssectional research design and non-probability sampling. The sample consisted of 218 individuals working in portuguese public organizations from different sectors. The results show that both the perception of fulfillment of the psychological contract and work engagement seem to vary according to age. In terms of perceived fulfillment of the psychological contract, higher levels were found in the younger age group and lower levels in the older age group. As for work engagement, the results indicate that it is older people who are more engaged with their work. The results of the study also point to the existence of a positive and statistically significant correlation between fulfillment of the psychological contract, work engagement and general satisfaction with life, which indicates that the greater the perception of fulfillment of the psychological contract, the more engagement at work and the more general satisfaction with life. The same is true of the work engagement variable: the more engagement, the more overall life satisfaction.
