Abstract

Studying the moderating role of age in the relationship between toxic leadership and turnover intention is highly relevant for several reasons. Firstly, toxic leadership can have a significant impact on organizations, negatively affecting employees in multiple dimensions, namely in terms of psychological well-being, morale, productivity and performance. Understanding how different age groups react to this type of leadership is essential for developing better strategies to mitigate the negative effects and prevent employees from leaving, thus reducing the costs associated with staff turnover. In this sense, the main objective of this study was to explore how workers of different age groups perceive and react to toxic leadership, and how these perceptions influence their intentions to leave the organization. A Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Toxic Leadership Scale and the Turnover Intention Scale were used to collect the information. This was a non-probabilistic sample by convenience and snowballing, consisting of a total of 329 workers. The results revealed that there is a positive relationship between Toxic Leadership and Turnover Intention, with age not proving to be a moderating factor in this relationship. This study thus provides important empirical data for the creation of organizational policies that promote healthier and more inclusive work environments, resulting in greater employee satisfaction and well-being, which could translate into a lower likelihood of employee turnover.
