This report, based on a reflexive and descriptive methodology, appears within the scope of the Curricular Unit "Final Internship and Report", which is an integral part of the 13th Edition of the Master's degree in Nursing with a specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of the Person in Critical Situation, of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa do Porto. It intends to expose the path trodden during the two final stages, carried out in a Specific Monovalent Intensive Care Unit and a Multipurpose Intensive Care Unit, addressing and reflecting on the personal and professional growth developed, and which allowed the acquisition of competencies as a Specialist Nurse in Surgical Medical Nursing in the above mentioned. After the introduction, chapter two addresses the competencies developed before the realization of this Curricular Unit and that served as leverage for the rest of the way. In chapter three, we started by contextualizing the different internship sites and then critically reflecting on the process of developing competencies in the area of specialization. For this, within each Competence Domain and for each objective listed, the activities developed in each internship site and, consequently, the acquired competencies were identified. Finally, we carried out an overall analysis of the path taken, encompassed in the conclusion. Within the themes addressed to improve the day-to-day care provided and acquire skills as an Expert Nurse, we highlight the development of a proposal for ventilatory weaning protocol and the analysis in the literature on the humanization of care for people in critical situations. We also added the relevance of the critical reflections based on clinical practice in the area of specialty, which resulted in implications for professional practice, demonstrating personal and professional growth. During this course, competencies were developed in the approach to the person in a critical situation and/or family/caregiver, demonstrating a professional, ethical and legal practice; quality practices, in particular in programs for the continuous improvement of services; prevention, intervention, and control of infection and antimicrobial resistance; in nursing care management, anticipating instability and risk of organ failure; in the management and leadership of resources; and the development of professional learning, namely self-knowledge and assertiveness, based on clinical practice specialized in current scientific evidence. In a sense, this path was rich in experiences that made it possible not only to acquire skills but also to critical-reflexive development as an Expert Nurse, which resulted in implications for professional practice, namely in the approach to the critical person as a whole.
