Within the scope of the 15th Master’s Course in Nursing Specialization Program: Medical-Surgical in the area of the Critically Ill Patient, of the Institute of Health Sciences (Porto) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, an internship report was developed, referring to the curriculum unit "Final Internship and Report", of the 3rd semester of the course (school year 2022/2023). This internship took place in two different contexts, the Extra-hospital Emergency from 09/05/2022 to 10/26/2022, and the Emergency Service from 10/27/2022 to 12/17/2022. This curriculum unit was carried out under the guidance of a PhD Professor at the Institute of Health Sciences (Porto) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa with the mentorship of Specialist Nurses in Medical-Surgical Nursing from the respective clinical placements. In this report a critical and reflective analysis was developed regarding the activities carried out, the acquisition of competences, the role of the specialist nurse and the importance of research within the different contexts. The structure of this report meets everything that is relevant and essential for the fulfilment of the planned objectives. Firstly, in a concise way, the development path of previous competences was described, with acknowledgement to the internship of the 2nd semester of the first year of the Course, as well as the characterization of the clinical placement contexts, the extra-hospital emergency and the emergency service. Afterwards, an approach regarding the different common and specific skills acquired during the internship was performed and the way in which the lived experiences and the research were relevant to their acquisition, with the activities developed being explained. Thus, the analysis of the clinical practice combined with reflexion on the acquired skills, evidenced the development of different areas of care delivery to the critically ill patient and to the family, such as the anticipation of hemodynamic instability and the risk of multiorgan dysfunction, the pain management, the administration of therapeutic protocols, the promotion of well-being, the communication, the support to the family and the person with emotional disorders, the infection prevention and control and the development of critical reflection skills and. Conclusively, this pathway was carried out with the aim of achieving a master’s degree in nursing Specialization Program: Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of the Critically Ill Patient, developing the skills advocated by the Portuguese Nursing Council, an evidence-based nursing practice, a critical and reflective thinking and the delivery of specialized care in a holistic, fast and effective way.
