This report is a portrait of the journey towards developing the competences of a Specialist Nurse and its purpose is to reflect the work carried out in the curricular unit “Final Internship and Report” which is part of the curricular plan of the 16th Master's Degree in Nursing with a Specialisation in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Condition. The report refers to two practice contexts: an intensive care unit in the northern region of Portugal and the prehospital emergency. This document was drawn up with reference to the Common Competences of the Specialist Nurse and includes an account of the experiences and development of activities during the internship, based on scientific evidence which enabled the acquisition of competences in the area of specialisation. The main activities carried out in this journey to developing skills in caring for critically ill people are listed including: the construction of a proposal for a tool to support the transition of care using the ISBAR technique; the development of a literature review on managing the environment in the intensive care unit; and realisation of an assignment on integrating mindfulness as a strategy for reducing stress in prehospital emergency nurses which culminated in training for prehospital emergency nurses. This report also highlights the learnings in caring for people in critical condition and their families, in responding to emergency and exceptional situations and in preventing and controlling infection and antimicrobial resistance. The reflection inherent in this report has allowed us to assimilate the need to promote specialised and safe care and the key contribution of research in the continuous improvement of the quality of care.
