Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the importance of the introduction of Augmented Reality devices in tourism, namely in museum exhibits by condensing the knowledge of several different approaches in literature about Information Technologies and Augmented Reality, and studying in detail the museum World of Discoveries (Museu dos Descobrimentos), in Porto. Augmented Reality, which can be defined as an overlapping of digitally produced material over the real world, will be addressed in this study by identifying and evaluating the difficulties in the exploitation of Augmented Reality technology in Portuguese museums, by clarifying which are the core characteristics of Augmented Reality that play a major role in tourism and museums, by finding out if Augmented Reality has a relevant impact in museum exhibits and by solidifying the knowledge of Augmented Reality through a case study, which can be grounds to future practical or theoretical applications. It’s not entirely possible to isolate the outcome of Information Technologies, Augmented Reality in this particular case, from all the other aspects that affect any given organization. Therefore, information systems must be a central cornerstone in organizations aiming to offer tourism-related services. Augmented Reality, as any other Information Technology, should be considered a complement to knowledge that may provide a touristic organization with the means to achieve new markets, enhance the operational performance, maximize revenue or provide a better experience.
