Abstract

This report is part of the curricular unit "Final Internship and Report", which is part of the Master's Degree in Nursing, with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of Critical Care Patients. The main objective is to describe the skills acquired in the context of an intensive care unit and in an emergency service, through a critical-reflective analysis. The initial reflection on the skills acquired previously - in the first contact with the critically patient - became essential, since it allowed the recognition of problems of special complexity, the critical analysis of the results found, as well as the capacity for diagnosis and clinical judgement. The intensive care unit is characterized by being a very noisy service. These exaggerated levels of noise harm the patient, contributing to an increase in delirium and decrease in the quality of sleep. Therefore, it was pertinent to investigate the intervention of specialist nurses, in promoting the well-being of the person in a critical situation. During the passage through the intensive care, and emergency service, skills were developed in terms of caring for critically patients, namely: non-verbal communication skills which, based on the establishment of a therapeutic relationship with the patient and his/her family, become essential for the provision of quality care; care and resource management skills - inherent to the need to promote favorable nursing practice environments; skills in the promotion of infection prevention and control strategies, and also in terms of the domain of learning - being a promoter of change and active agent in the field of research by producing scientific works, sharing the results with the teams. It was a very enriching journey, with implications at professional level, contributing to my critical-reflective ability, reinforcing the importance of the theoretical-practical relationship, and of valuing the patient’s plural needs, always respecting a biopsychosocial vision.
