This study seeks to understand the leadership competencies that followers most value in their leaders, as well as the association between these competencies and the followers' motivational factors. Through semi-structured interviews, we surveyed a sample of 64 individuals from Auchan Retail Portugal, in the store located in Maia. The main results of the study reiterate what the literature has suggested: leadership effectiveness depends, to a large extent, on competencies that are not of a technical nature. Accessibility and support in critical moments, innovation in communication, and team motivation were the most mentioned behaviors of the leaders. Social-relational competencies having been the most cited, there is reason to assume that they are relevant the motivation of subordinates. Organizations should pay attention to these competencies when selecting people for leadership roles, and they need to make an effort to develop leaders oriented towards these competencies, making their leadership more effective.
