This dissertation addresses the problem of stress and burnout in a sample of 333 teachers in higher education, giving, for this purpose, a literature review, to form a critical reflection on the issues, it was concluded that teachers belong a profession of risk and research has paid little attention to these phenomena in academics. In the Portuguese case, for example, we did not find any studies that address these issues in these professionals, which makes our research pioneering in Portugal. The objectives set for the study were: i) identify the levels, sources and factors leading to occupational stress in university teaching profession, ii) identify the contents of burnout related to the work of a faculty member, iii) determine the significant differences in function of personal and professional characteristics, iv) analyze the differences between the variables of occupational stress, burnout according to the processes of primary and secondary cognitive appraisal; v) note the existence of association between measures of primary appraisal and secondary outcome measures; vi) analyze the predictors of burnout in assessing cognitive function and stress levels. The evaluation protocol included a demographic questionnaire, which allowed us to describe the participants in terms of personal and professional, features the processes of cognitive assessment, which sought to assess on the one hand, the importance and personal meaning attributed to the profession and on the other hand, the resources that the professionals think they posses to address and resolve stressful situations, the stress questionnaire , which reflected the main areas of stress in teachers, and a inventory burnout, which evaluated the levels shown by the teachers. As a theoretical framework were selected models that best fit the goals set, appearing in this sense the Transactional Model Lazarus, the Occupational Stress Model of Cooper, and the Multidimensional Model of Maslach. The results prompted for high levels of occupational stress found mostly in university professors, and the reason for this malaise overwork, the pressure to publish in journals / publishers of international recognition and reconciliation between work and personal. There is, also evident in the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, although we have not found any case of full burnout.
