Abstract

This thesis is part of the Project Rendimento Adequado em Portugal, which aims to develop a methodology that allows Portugal to estimate a minimum income standard that is adequate, defensible and scientifically grounded, to be used in the monitoring of poverty and to inform the analysis of social policies against poverty in Portugal. This project is based methodologically in the consensual budget approach and based on the main human needs theories. The analytical framework is based on the centrality of wage labor as a mechanism for cross satisfaction of several fundamental human needs. It recognizes, on the one hand, the importance of work as a way of satisfying human needs for the well-being of individuals and, on the other hand, knowing that the crisis of wage societies generates unemployment and changes in work field, as well as the weakening of social protection mechanisms, recognizes the impact on this mechanism of human needs satisfaction. Empirically, this research considers as corpus 9 focus groups developed in the first stage of the project - oriented groups - relying on a sample of 68 individuals with different socio-demographic characteristics. The content analysis allowed to conclude on the relation with basic human needs and to know the perception of Portuguese citizens about this satisfaction mechanism, as both as enhancer, as a constrainer of the satisfaction of human needs.
