Abstract

Caring for children in the process of illness is a constant challenge for nurses, who are confronted daily with situations of emotionality that they are not always prepared to manage. The emotional competence of nurses has been increasingly studied, assuming the relevance of emotional work in daily care practice as a useful tool and a sign of increased competence. The central theme of this report is based on the reflection on emotional work as part of the nurse's identity, focusing on the strategies that promote emotional management, assuming the importance of developing skills in the area of emotional regulation. The objective of this report is to synthesize the work developed along the Master's course, focusing on the last semester, seeking to reflect on the practice and to mobilize concepts in order to produce knowledge, in a logic of Advanced Nursing. The methodology used focuses on a reflexive practice based on scientific evidence, focusing on the cross-referencing of the experiences lived in the different stages of the internship with the theoretical foundation that supports the performance and the competencies required to obtain the Master's Degree and the title of Specialist Child and Pediatric Nurse. It can be concluded that nurses regulate the emotions of hospitalized children either through the management of the physical environment in which they are found (examples are music therapy and colored uniforms) or through the way in which they construct the therapeutic relationship (which must be nourished of affection and in a perspective of involvement). It is also important to mention the need of nurses to regulate their own disposition for the therapeutic relationship and the importance of promoting the expression of feelings on the part of the child and family.
